Sad Finland’s first openly g@y ice hockey player found ‘m*rdered’ at home

Janne Puhakka, Finland’s first openly gay professional ice hockey player, was tragically found murdered at his home in Espoo in October 2024. Puhakka, who played for teams like Espoo Blues and Espoo United, made headlines in 2019 when he came out publicly, breaking barriers in the traditionally conservative world of hockey.

The 29-year-old was killed by his former partner, Rolf Nordmo, a 66-year-old Norwegian veterinarian. After their relationship ended recently, Puhakka had visited Nordmo’s home to resolve practical matters, where he was fatally shot. Authorities have confirmed that Nordmo admitted to the crime, using a hunting shotgun that he legally owned.

The news has shocked both the hockey and LGBTQ+ communities, who mourn the loss of a figure who played an important role in advancing LGBTQ+ visibility in sports. Tributes have poured in for Puhakka, celebrating his bravery and contributions
