The feud between the two managers regularly hit headlines, and will pick up again when they meet for the Manchester derby next season. However, Mourinho and Guardiola are ready to compete against one another during the summer, with both United and City associated with approaches for Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Of course, the persistent transfer rumours seem incredibly unlikely for a whole host of reasons. Neither side seemed close to competing for the Premier League title last season, and both squads are expected to receive significant changes in the transfer window that will not necessarily guarantee success. Aubameyang would be better suited to remaining at Dortmund with an ambitious team that suits his style of play.
Whether the transfer happens or not, the story certainly sets the tone for things to come in the year ahead. Even though United are not constantly dominating every season and have missed out on the Champions League, they still can go toe-to-toe with their City neighbours in the transfer market based on history and reputation. The Red Devils will continue to throw everything at the Citizens regardless of their diminished status, and the arrival of their managers will only serve to fuel the enmity, as was the case with Real and Barca.
