Jose Mourinho must change his mentality as Manchester United manager, says Ray Wilkins

Former Manchester United player Ray Wilkins believes that new manager Jose Mourinho needs to change his style of play in order to please the club’s supporters.
Mourinho’s predecessor Louis van Gaal endured a barrage of criticism for United’s slow build-up play. In addition to attempting to win trophies, Mourinho will be tasked with making the side more entertaining to watch.
The Portuguese has at times instructed his team to adopt a defensive approach, but Wilkins believes he may have to alter his stance at Old Trafford.

The Sky pundit told Sky Sports: “He needs to change the way he thinks about his football a little bit. One of the criticisms levelled at Van Gaal was the fact that he was very defensive.
“Possession is fantastic, and Mourinho likes to play that way, but he likes to play with a progression as well. He likes his players to be aggressive, go forward and score.
“He will change a bit to the way a Manchester United supporter wants them to play and he will bring a winning mentality as well. Wherever he’s been he’s won. He won’t settle for second best.”

United created just 312 chances in the Premier League this season, and their lack of flair and attacking ingenuity undermined them at times.
Although Mourinho will inherit a squad containing some exciting talents, such as Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, it’s clear that changes are needed if the club are to challenge for the Premier League title next season.
Mourinho may seek to sign a new centre-back to partner Chris Smalling, while a creative midfielder and perhaps a new striker could also be on his wishlist.
United’s final season under Van Gaal ended in impressive fashion, as the club won the FA Cup. However they missed out on Champions League qualification, which ultimately proved to be the Dutchman’s undoing.
Mourinho was dismissed by Chelsea last term after overseeing an abject start to the campaign, but the 53-year-old is still regarded as one of the standout managers in world football due to his previous achievements.
