The ongoing recession has made prices of food items soar. If you follow our weekly price checks, you’d notice that these prices may not be coming down anytime soon.
Luckily there are cheap substitutes for what one is used to. Even though some of the meals mentioned here are seen as street foods, they would help you keep hunger at bay and on a budget.
1. Ewa Agoyin
Since time immemorial, Ewa Agoyin (Beans of the agoin people) has rescued Nigerians from the pangs of hunger. Depending on your taste, you can add either bread or yam to it. A plate of this meal is typically sold for between N150 and N200.
2. Boli and groundnut
If our senators decide to add Roasted plantain and groundnut to a list of National treasures, I’m sure there would be almost be no objections. Sold in every part of Nigeria where plantains are consumed, it usually costs between N80 to N200.
3. Ogi and Akara/Moin Moin
Some call it Akamu but Oyibo people describe it as a fermented cereal pudding typically made from maize, sorghum, or millet. Add Akara or Moin Moin (both bean cakes) to it and you have a meal that can keep hunger at bay for at least 6 hours. You shouldn’t spend more than N300 if you want this meal.
4. Agege bread
Is there any street food that is more recognized than Agege bread in Nigeria today? I seriously doubt it. Named after a popular suburb of Lagos state (Agege), this bread is sold in different sizes. One stand out quality of it is its texture. If it is not soft, then it isn’t Agege bread.
5. Fried yam
Yam is still very expensive but sliced into small pieces, it is a cheap alternative that will ensure that hunger remains far away from you. Just tell the vendor how much you want and voila! You will belleful in no time.
