See 4 midfielders Man Utd should have signed instead of Pogba

Paul Pogba celebrates his goal against Fenerbache in the Europa League

It is evident that Paul Pogba is making serious efforts to justify the world record fee Manchester United spent to bring him back to Old Trafford.

The Frenchman became the world’s most expensive footballer when he joined the Red Devils in the summer for £89million.

Here are four cheaper and probably better alternatives Manchester United should have considered ahead of Paul Pogba; 1. Ilkay Gundogan (Manchester City)  When Gundogan decided to join Manchester City in the summer, he said he did so because of Pep Guardiola.

Though he came in injured, his ability was never in doubt. Between 2012 and 2014, the German was probably the best midfielder in the world, but a knee ligament injury suffered in 2014 sidelined him for a year.

He has had to deal with injuries of late, but there is no doubting the 25-year-old’s quality. It is safe to say he has been one of City’s better players this season

2. Renato Sanches (Bayern Munich)  Jose Mourino recently admitted he wanted Renato Sanches to join him at Manchester United and it is easy to see why. Mourinho revealed Bayern Munich acted fast to secure the 2016 Golden Boy award winner ahead of United making use of the opportunity that he was not yet appointed.

Sanches has been impressive for Bayern Munich since his move from Benfica despite having to compete with Thiago Alcantara, Arturo Vidal, Joshua Kimmich and Xabi Alonso for a place in a midfield three.

3. Gonzalo Castro Following Gundogan’s injury last season, Castro made the base of midfield his own, alongside Julien Weigl (he competed with the two for a spot) and he did not disappoint.

The Spaniard is not getting much game time in midfield for Dortmund as he has to compete with Mario Gotze, Nuri Sahin, Andre Schrulle, Julian Weigl, Emre Mor  and Sebastian Rode for a place in the center of the pack.

The 29-year-old is a good passer of the ball and a good tackler. Plays very much like Arturo Vidal and can shoot from distance.

4. Radja Nainggolan Roma’s engine room for the past three seasons.

You only need to see his goal for Belgium against Wales at Euro 2016 to know all about his quality.

He was the subject of a serious bid from Chelsea over the summer, but the Italian side refused to sell why the midfielder was reluctant to move.

The 27-year-old is a good passer of the ball and has all abundance of stamina. He is a chain smoker though and never fails to admit.
