Real Madrid‘s ongoing interest in signing David De Gea from Manchester United could force Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois into making a decision about his future sooner rather than later.
The 24-year-old confessed earlier this week that he would like a return to La Liga, saying he considered himself to be “half-Spanish”.
It is believed that Real Madrid tried to sign Courtois this summer but stopped talks when Chelsea slapped a £73 million price tag on the Belgian international.
According to the Evening Standard Madrid still maintain their interest in De Gea, who they infamously came close to signing last summer only for technical errors to stop the deal on deadline day.
Courtois indicated he wanted to run down his contract with the Blues, set to expire in 2019, before deciding his future but if Real decide to sign De Gea then the goalkeeper could miss out on the transfer to the Bernabeu.
Therefore Courtois must, per the article, decide whether to force an exit from Chelsea in a bid to ensure he is Real’s No.1 choice.
