According to SunSport (UK), the England captain has two years left in his current £300,000-a-week contract and United are looking at Gareth Bale as replacement for the 30-year-old.

A United source said: “Rooney’s recent comments about wanting to extend his contract certainly pricked a few ears. “There are people inside the club who feel it could be their last and only shot to avoid him staying another year and then entering his final 12 months.”

 Rooney who has spent a dozen years at Old Trafford has in the past indicated that he wants to end his career in Manchester.
However, it was thought he could leave the Theatre of Dreams in the hope of having playing time next season, should England qualify for the Russia 2018 World Cup.

The Red Devils’ captain has received offers to play in China where teams are willing to pay huge amount in the far East nation. Rooney’s boyhood club Everton have also made their interest known in ‘buying-back’ the striker, but would have to pay through their nose to land the Three Lions captain. The 30-year-old has scored 179 in 372 appearances for the club helping United win five Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy.
