Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has wished Paul Pogba “the best” ahead of his imminent move to Manchester United this summer.
After a month of speculation, Pogba is finally set to complete his world-record move to United from Juventus, just four years after leaving Old Trafford. Los Blancos were long-believed to be admirers of the 23-year-old midfielder, and had been tipped to rival the Red Devils for his signature this summer.
However Real dropped out of the race some time ago due to the sheer cost of the deal, as Pogba has developed into one of the best midfielders in the world during his time at the Juventus Stadium. He struggled to replicate that form for France at Euro 2016, but that hasn’t dissuaded United in their pursuit of him.
With the transfer now on the verge of completion, Zidane was asked for his thoughts on the matter, and although he admitted that he had nothing to say, the former World Cup winner still wished his compatriot good luck.
“I don’t think anything to do with Pogba, he’s a Manchester United player and that’s it,” the Real boss told Spanish news agency EFE. “I wish him the best, nothing more.”
Pogba scored eight goals and created 54 chances in 35 Serie A appearances last term, winning 51% of his average duels and with an average pass accuracy of 83%, as Juventus finished the campaign on 91 points at the summit, nine clear of Napoli in second and 11 ahead of Roma in third.
Meanwhile United finished fifth in the Premier League on 66 points, level with Manchester City in fourth but with an inferior goal difference, subsequently missing out on the Champions League. Although they won the FA Cup a week later, it wasn’t enough for Louis van Gaal to keep his job, as he was sacked just 48 hours after that triumph.
Jose Mourinho’s men begin this season with an away clash at Bournemouth on Sunday, before games against Southampton and Hull City in the following weeks.
