Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has been linked with an exit from Old Trafford this summer.
The 34 year old midfielder has spent a decade at Manchester United and was expected to leave this summer once his contract expires. However, club legend Paddy Crerand has now confirmed on MUTV (the club’s official channel) that Carrick has signed a new one year deal with Manchester United.
Crerand said: “Something that happened today that nobody has mentioned, and I’m delighted that he has signed another contract: Michael Carrick. He’s signed a contract for another year.”
“There was a situation where it looked as if his contract was up at the end of this year and that was it, but from what I’m gathering he’s there for another year.”
The fans will be delighted with the news that Carrick will stay for another season. Despite his age, Carrick is one of the finest central midfielders around and his experience will be a major plus for new manager Jose Mourinho.
Carrick was set to leave if Van Gaal had stayed, but it seems that a change of manager has convinced him that his future lies at Old Trafford.
Mourinho will look to sign his preferred central midfielders this summer, but Carrick could still play a vital role for especially now that United will play a lot of games due to their participation in the Europa League.
Mourinho is already looking to shape up his midfield and the likes of Blind, Mata and Fellaini are expected to leave.
