Xabi Alonso came up with a huge free kick for Bayern Munich vs. Atletico Madrid in the Champions League

Coming into the second leg of their Champions League semifinal matchup against Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich knew they had to come up big in front of their home fans. They conceded one goal in Madrid to fall down 1-0 on aggregate and would need to protect their own net in Germany while also finding the back of the net at least once as well. That’s where Xabi Alonso was ready to step up.
Midway through the first half, Bayern earned a free kick right outside the box—just inches away from earning a penalty to be honest. Atletico formed a huge wall as Xabi Alonso and Robert Lewandowski both postured to take the free kick for Bayern. It was Xabi Alonso that ultimately took it with a great deal of power, though, and the shot took a deflection off the wall and then careened into the back of the net to pull Bayern ahead 1-0 for the match and even 1-1 on aggregate:
That’s such a huge play in such a huge Champions League moment, which was evidenced by how shaken Atletico was after the Xabi Alonso goal. Soon after, they actually conceded a penalty that, had it not been for a fantastic Jan Oblak save on the Thomas Muller, would’ve put the away side in a bad way.
Penalty aside, that was a fantastic effort from Xabi Alonso and one that had never been more necessary than in the moment that he delivered it.
