Forget Lewandowski, Bayern Munich's Mehdi Benatia would be a superb addition for Arsenal
Arsenal have been linked with Bayern Munich duo Robert Lewandowski and Mehdi Benatia.
According to the Daily Star,
Arsenal are keen on signing Bayern Munich duo Robert Lewandowski and
Mehdi Benatia with the club set to spend big this summer in a bid to
finally win the title. The Gunners have experienced a disappointing Premier League campaign, falling way short of expectations and allowing themselves to be pipped to the title by both Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur.
Big signings are needed for Arsene Wenger to take the club to the next level, though names such as Robert Lewandowski remains highly unlikely and seemingly unrealistic on more than one account.
However, his teammate Mehdi Benatia could be available this summer, and he is exactly the sort of player which Arsenal need to partner leading centre-back Laurent Koscielny in the heart of defence.
With Per Mertesacker ageing and on the decline, the North London club have had to make do with inexperienced pair Gabriel Paulista and Calum Chambers and both have proven inadequate.
Benatia is a renowned top defender possessing strength, positional awareness and ability on the ball.
With Bild reporting Bayern’s likely move for Borussia Dortmund skipper Mats Hummels this summer, Benatia is likely to become available and a number of clubs will see him as an ideal option.
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino yet to decide if Eric Dier will face Chelsea
Tottenham Hotspur head coach Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Eric Dier is “doing well” but remains a doubt for Monday night’s trip to Stamford Bridge.
Spurs lock horns with Chelsea tomorrow evening in the hope of breathing one last breath into their bid for the title, which looks almost certain to be on its way to the King Power Stadium after Leicester drew 1-1 with Manchester United on Sunday.
A Tottenham victory would lift them to within five points of top spot but past results heavily favour the Blues, who are undefeated at home against Spurs since February 1990.
Nothing but a win will suffice but Pochettino’s men could make the trip across London without one of their star players of 2015/16 after Dier suffered concussion during Monday night’s 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion.
And with the match creeping ever closer Pochettino has provided an update on the midfielder, revealing that he will be assessed in Spurs’ final training session beforehand.
“Eric Dier suffered concussion and is doing well but we need to assess him,” the Argentinian told reporters. “We will decide Sunday after the last training session if he is available or not.”
Dier was forced off after 74 minutes against the Baggies last time out and has missed just one of his side’s 35 Premier League fixtures this season so far.
That one match was a 0-0 stalemate with Liverpool at White Hart Lane and Pochettino will give the 22-year-old every chance to recover with all three points needed at the home of title holders Chelsea.
Anything less than a victory will officially end Tottenham’s bid for top spot and to lose Dier, who has been a stalwart for the Lilywhites this term, will be a huge blow if he’s deemed unfit to play.

Arsenal and Chelsea targert reveals he is flattered by Tottenham interest
LYON star Samuel Umtiti has played down rumours linking him with a move to Tottenham in the summer.
And although Umtiti revealed he is faltered by the interest from the Premier League club, he claimed he isn't thinking about a move just yet.
"It is flattering that Pochettino is interested in me, he is a manager that I like and his team is performing well," Umtiti told French programme Telefoot.
Tottenham face competition for the the 22-year-old, who has been in outstanding form in Ligue 1 this season.
North London rivals Arsenal have been linked with a move for the defender, while Newcastle are apparently keen on a summer deal.
Chelsea are also believed to be in the market for the Frenchman, who has been lined up to replace John Terry at Stamford Bridge.
Bayern Munich will put the disappointment of failing to secure the Bundesliga title behind them to focus on Tuesday's Champions League semi-final game against Atletico Madrid, chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said on Sunday.
The German side host Atletico in the second leg on Tuesday
having lost the first game 1-0 and they were held to a 1-1 draw by
Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday.
"Of course we would have liked to win the Bundesliga," Rummenigge told the club's website.
"I'd be lying if I told you otherwise. We can't do anything
about it now," he added. "We're still five points clear and have a good
goal difference.
"We now turn our full focus to Tuesday and we'll give it everything."
Bayern needed to beat Gladbach to guarantee their third
consecutive domestic title and they took the lead when Thomas Muller
struck in the sixth minute. They were forced to settle for a point,
however, when Andre Hahn equalised 18 minutes from time.
"We had hoped to clinch the title," Bayern defender Philipp Lahm said.
"But against a tough side we didn't manage it. We'll just have
to wait until next Saturday (away at mid-table Ingolstadt) to become
champions again."
Bayern are five points ahead of second-placed Borussia Dortmund with two matches to play
