Can Bayern Munich overturn first leg loss?
By the end of tonight we will know the first contender of the 2015/16 Champions League final as at 19.45 Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich go head to head in the second leg of their enthralling semi-final tie.
The German giants will be the hosts of tonight’s fixture as they try to overcome a 1-0 deficit against La Liga’s best defensive team at the Allianz Arena.
Tonights match has all the ingredients to be a Champions League classic as it is the home team and five time European champions who are having to come from behind in an epic attempt to reach their sixth Champions League final.
It’s a telling sign of just how unpredictable a match is when even the bookies can’t make up their mind. Bayern Munich are currently heavy favourites to win the game yet Atletico Madrid are odds on to qualify for the final.
The first leg tie was a mightily tense affair and a perfect display of the contrast between the two sides’ managerial tactics. Pep Guardiola’s Bayern dominated possession, playing silky passing football, while Diego Simeone’s Atletico highlighted once again that they have a defence built like a brick wall.
Aside from a sweet strike from David Alaba that rocketed off the crossbar, Bayern never really posed a threat on the Atletico goal and were punished early on when Atletico’s Saul Niguez scored a spectacular solo effort in the 11th minute.
With Pep destined for the Premier League with Man City next season, this is his last chance to perfect his Bayern Munich record with a Champions League victory. However, there is no doubt that Atletico will be just as fired up for the match as they attempt to win the first Champions League in the club’s history, after coming painfully close in 2013/14.
The atmosphere at Atletico’s Vicente Calderon will be hard to match but Bayern fans will be out in force tonight to create a special night of their own. Bayern will stick to their Pep-own-brand tactics in hope that they can penetrate any mistakes in Atleti’s defence but, unfortunately for them, that is the same defence that have only conceded sixteen goals in thirty-six La Liga games. Atletico will play in their trademark solid, physical and efficient style and hope they can catch Bayern on the counter attack.
The first goal in this game is going to be huge. If Bayern get it, they can easily go on to win the tie but if Atletico sneak one in, the German side would have to score at least three to qualify. It is a fixture of the highest quality that is set up to be a spine-tingling encounter for any football fan.
