President Joe Biden has sparked controversy by calling for Donald Trump to be "locked up" 14 days before the presidential election. Speaking to New Hampshire Democrats on Tuesday night, October 22, Biden said, “We gotta lock him up,” in reference to the former president. He quickly clarified, adding, “Politically lock him up.”
Biden was discussing some of Trump's proposed plans for a second term when he remarked, “I know this sounds bizarre – it sounds like if I said this five years ago, you’d lock me up. We gotta lock him up.”
This echoes the infamous “Lock her up” chants from Trump’s 2016 campaign, which targeted his then-opponent Hillary Clinton. Trump has previously denied leading those chants, telling Fox News in June, “Hillary Clinton, I didn’t say ‘lock her up,’ but the people would all say ‘lock her up, lock her up.’”
According to the New York Post, a source close to Biden explained that his follow-up comment indicated he did not mean to suggest Trump should literally be incarcerated.
The Trump campaign swiftly responded, issuing a statement calling on Vice President Kamala Harris to denounce Biden’s comments. “Joe Biden just admitted the truth: he and Kamala’s plan all along has been to politically persecute their opponent, President Trump, because they can’t beat him fair and square. The Harris-Biden administration is the real threat to democracy. We call on Kamala Harris to condemn Joe Biden’s disgraceful remark,” Trump Campaign Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
