For anyone who hasn’t heard the term ‘lithopedion babies,’ this story will be scary and shocking. A 90-year-old woman in Chile has been carrying a foetus in her body for the last 50 years .

The woman discovered she was pregnant in scans done after she had a bad fall. The foetus weighing two kilos died during the pregnancy and calcified.
It was never removed from the woman’s body.

She lived with the calcified foetus in her body for 50 years. This phenomenon is known as lithopedion, when the amniotic sac calcifies as the body’s defence against infection from the decomposing tissue. Yes, this is reality, not an excerpt from a science fiction story.
