Liverpool were in cruise control against Leicester City until Lucas Leiva gifted a goal to Jamie Vardy. He was publicly ridiculed on Twitter.
Even when Liverpool win, their defensive issues find a way to spring up. They turned a comfortable win over Arsenal into a nail-biter when they let them back in it, and they could very well do the same against Leicester City.
For about 30 minutes of the first half, Liverpool absolutely swarmed Leicester. Their Gegenpressing was suffocating, and it looked like the defending champions would find no way back. But Lucas Leiva handed Jamie Vardy a goal on a silver platter to make their halftime lead one instead of two.
Even though Liverpool were winning, their fans didn’t hold anything back.
If we don’t win this I’m not forgiving Lucas— ㅤㅤ (@CoutinhoFlair) September 10, 2016
We were outstanding until that Lucas mistake. Completely changed the momentum. Still gobsmacked by that. Most ridiculous goal to concede.— Joel (@_lfcjoel) September 10, 2016
That Lucas howler was like the 6-putt Ernie Els had to start the Masters.— Grant Wahl (@GrantWahl) September 10, 2016

I honestly hate Lucas so much. Awful awful player.— The Anfield Chat (@TheAnfieldChat) September 10, 2016
Lucas has split time this season with the U23 team and the senior team, but after that mistake, they’ll probably be keeping him down there.
One has to wonder how much longer Jurgen Klopp can carry on with Liverpool’s defense and goalkeeping. Sure, he had limited resources at Borussia Dortmund, but their team was anchored by Mats Hummels. And after completing a big-money switch to Bayern Munich, the chances of a reunion at Anfield are very small.
Liverpool are still heading in the right direction under Klopp’s guidance, but as long as they keep making mistakes like this, they won’t be title contenders. Hopefully this mistake will be a wake-up call.
