Umtiti signs for Barcelona
Samuel Umtiti completed his transfer to Barcelona last Friday, as the French international made the move from Lyon, where he came through the ranks.
Umtiti was signed on the back of a solid Euro 2016, where he made some impressive appearances in the French defence en route to the final.
Umtiti leaving Lyon – and taking it with him
The centre-half is now moving on to a bold and challenging new chapter in his career, and he’s eternally grateful to Lyon for what they gave him.
Having come through the ranks at Lyon and been affiliated with the club for the past 14 years, leaving the Ligue 1 club is clearly a wrench for Umtiti.
He posted a particularly eloquent letter to Twitter today, which was written with a lot of pure and raw emotion.
The letter opens with a wonderful paragraph:
‘What does it mean to leave? We get ready to say goodbye when we’re separating from someone…but this isn’t the case.
I’m not separating myself from Lyon; you can’t erase 14 years like that; I’m not leaving my home…I’m taking it with me.’
He now has a big task on his hands: dislodging Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano from the Barcelona defence.
