After a Champions League and Euro 2016 win the Portuguese footballer is enjoying a hard-earned break with his mum and son
It might seem idyllic that Cristiano Ronaldo is lying on the beach as an attentive masseuse rubs oil into his thighs - but the woman in question is his mother.
Cristiano, 31, is holidaying with his mum, Delores Aveiro, and son, Cristiano Jr, in Ibiza, five.
The family have been sailing around the Spanish isle on a yacht since his side Portugal’s victory in the Euro 2016 final.
Ensuring the Real Madrid star’s assets did not burn, Delores, 61, sat between his legs to slather them in lotion.
Portugal’s star player Ronaldo suffered an injury in the final against France at the Stade de France over the weekend, after a clash with Dmitri Payet.
He left the pitch in tears despite attempting to play on, prompting mum Delores to rage on Twitter: “I cannot see my son in this way. The game is to kick the ball and not hurt the opponent.”
It’s a sign of emotional closeness with his family for someone who is at the top of a sport where support is crucial.
Athletes also get used to teams of physios working on them, in the same way a mechanic would fine-tune a car, so they tend to be more openly tactile than the rest of us... though there’s something of the little prince in the way Ronaldo stretches out and allows his mum to get stuck in.
