Fernando Torres will be an Atletico Madrid player for at least one more season after signing a new contract with the La Liga giants.
The 32-year-old’s future was up in limbo after his previous deal with Italian side A.C. Milan expired at the end of last season.
However, Atletico offered a lifeline to the striker who was a key part of their run to the Champions League Final while on loan at the Vicente Calderón Stadium.
Torres scored 12 times in 44 games in all competitions during the 2015/16 campaign.
I’m delighted to continue at home, the only place where I ever wanted to be, and it has finally come true.I’ve never had doubts about where I wanted to be during all this process in which we didn’t know what was going to happen and, in the end, what matters is that I have achieved what I was expecting.
– Fernando Torres
A product of Atletico’s youth academy, Torres played for the club’s first team from 2000 to 2007 before making the switch to Liverpool and the Premier League.
Three fruitful years at Anfield led to a big money move to Chelsea but Torres struggled to find form consistently throughout his time at the club.
A spell in Milan followed before the World Cup and European Championships winning player rejoined his boyhood club in 2014.
