West Ham's Carroll over Liverpool's Sturridge
In the eyes of actor, and of course West Ham fan, Ray Winstone anyway.
There's little doubt Andy Carroll's in fine end of season form for West Ham. Form warranting an inclusion in Roy Hodgson's England Euro 2016 squad ahead of Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge though?
Well, that is something that would divide opinions!
Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck are others (as things stand) ahead of Carroll, with the likelihood being that unless Hodgson takes six strikers the West Ham striker would miss out as by his own admission the England manager isn't too likely to take the Hammers striker.
In the eyes of Winstone, with what he told TalkSPORT, he's said he could be a 'secret weapon' in France:
'Yes I would. My forward line would be Harry Kane and Vardy. I'd take two forwards, and obviously take a winger, you have to have pace. Just as a keepsake, for when you are 1-0 down with 20 minutes to go, there is no-one in Europe that would be ready to play Andy Carroll. There's just not those centre forwards about. You bring in one and he'll liven them right up. So I'd definitely bring him - not just because I am a West Ham fan. I just think he's a bit of a secret weapon they wouldn't know much about.'
Why would he (Winstone) take Carroll over Sturridge though?
Being the West Ham fan he is isn't he reason this simply comes down to the fact Vardy and Kane are better goalscorers in his mind than Sturridge, who isn't 'a great finisher' compared to the Leicester and Tottenham strikers:
'And the Liverpool kid is not a great finisher! He could be, but the finishing is just not there for me. Vardy and Kane - Kane's an incredible finisher and (both) have got to start. I'd love to see us go there and really have a go. I think Roy has been brave up to now and used a lot of young players - as England manager I might give him a call and give him my opinion!'
I can see where he's coming from but I'd actually disagree. I do think Sturridge is actually a very good goalscorer, I wouldn't argue with Winstone face-to-face but do feel the Liverpool man is among the best finishers we have myself!
Carroll most definitely could be a 'different option' though, who I would like to see go to France but it isn't going to happen is it?
