Paul Scholes renews war of words with Louis van Gaal as former midfielder says:

'The FA Cup wasn't a priority… Manchester United were in the Champions League'

  • Louis van Gaal has faced huge criticism from ex-Manchester United stars
  • Van Gaal accused club legends of trying to get him the sack this season
  • Paul Scholes has once more criticised the Dutchman's reign at Old Trafford
  • Scholes claims the Champions League and Premier League were priorities
Paul Scholes has once more criticised Louis van Gaal on the eve of the FA Cup final, claiming Manchester United have fallen short of their goals this season, even if they lift the trophy at Wembley.
United face Crystal Palace on Saturday aiming to clinch a record-equalling 12th FA Cup, but Van Gaal has come in for criticism this season from former players, pundits and supporters for both his playing style and results in the Barclays Premier League.
Scholes' often harsh attacks on television have led the charge, with Van Gaal claiming last week that the club legend would be held responsible if he gets the sack at Old Trafford this summer

The defiant Dutchman still has one year remaining on his contract, but Scholes  - having described the team at times this term as a 'shambles' and a 'disaster' - believes even reaching the FA Cup final is a sign of how far the club has fallen.
'It [the drought] has been disappointing as we obviously want to be in the FA Cup final as it's a big day,' three-time FA Cup winner Scholes told Manchester Evening News
'It's long overdue but I also think it hasn't really been a priority. We all know it's a massive major competition but was it the priority over the Champions League or the Premier League?
'We always seem to go after those two which you can probably understand and a lot of the times we would go out of the FA Cup as our team was missing players that would needed to be rested for the big Champions League and Premier League games.'

United failed to get out of their group in the Champions League and a fifth-placed finish in the league means the club will not return to Europe's elite club competition until the 2017-18 season at the earliest.
United are favourites to end their three-year wait for silverware by overcoming Alan Pardew's side at Wembley on Saturday, but Scholes has warned his former club of complacency against dangerous opponents.
'I think people are probably assuming United are going to win it but it's going to be a tough game,' he added.
'Crystal Palace are a decent side and I think they can cause any teams problems, so I think it will be tight.'
