Manchester United do not have the characters to win the Premier League – Roy Keane
Lifting the Premier League in 2003: Roy Keane is considered Manchester United's most successful captain of all time.
Manchester United’s legendary midfielder Roy Keane has bemoaned a lack of characters in the current side and believes as a result winning the Premier League is a far off dream.
Keane, who made over 350 league appearances for the Old Trafford side, was renowned for his tenacity and never-say-die attitude, thus becoming a cornerstone in the club’s halcyon days of the 1990s and early 2000s, winning seven Premier League titles including four as captain, a record he shares with Chelsea’s John Terry.
But the last three seasons have seen the Red Devils take a slump, with the possibility of finishing outside the top-four places in two of those campaigns remaining a distinct possibility.
Keane has questioned the club’s recruitment policy, feeling their inadequacy in the market has set them back.

“Rebuild is too strong a word but there’s a lot of hard work ahead for Man United because of the competition around,” he said in a conversation with ESPN.
Worse for the Irishman is seeing their rivals, as well as others in the league, including newly crowned champions Leicester City, steal a march on them. “Leicester coming through. Chelsea will be stronger next year. Man City with a new manager. It’s not going to get any easier for United,” he added.

What’s imperative for the former PFA Players’ Player of the Year is for United to finally buy smart as they are certain to dip into the market. “Whatever about getting good players, United probably need two or three characters in the team so that on their bad days they’re capable of grinding out results.”
It was a trademark of United’s greatest teams under former boss Sir Alex Ferguson, there was always one or two players in every game playing at their optimum, and Keane does not see that in Louis van Gaal’s current incarnation. “I just think they don’t have enough characters in that team to get them back to winning league titles at this moment.”
