Cristiano Ronaldo posts sad positive message after Portugal draw with Austria

Sad Ronaldo

In a long and distinguished career, full of goals and silverware, Cristiano Ronaldo may have experienced one of the worst nights of his professional life in Paris on Saturday evening.
Ronaldo has had 20 efforts on goal in two matches so far at Euro 2016 but has failed to score. By his, or even anyone’s standards, these are pretty woeful numbers.
The Austria match was particularly poor for Ronaldo, with much of social media delighting in his travails.
The stand out moments came towards the end of the encounter as Ronaldo slammed a penalty against the post and then saw a goal disallowed, much to his chagrin.

Ronaldo takes to social media

Cristiano Ronaldo is the world’s most followed athlete on social media with numbers that simply beggar belief.
Even compared to Leo Messi, Ronaldo is way out in front on social media with follower counts that literally dwarf tiny countries like Iceland.
Over 63 million followers on Instagram. 112 million on Facebook. Just 43 million on Twitter.
These numbers provide Ronaldo with incredible reach to push his new clothing line, fragrance etc.
But, it also means that the Portuguese superstar and Real Madrid talisman has to front up, even after disappointing results and performances like last night.

“Sad”

A couple of hours after Portugal’s 0-0 draw with Austria, Ronaldo took to social media and posted a personal update in Portuguese.
Often Ronaldo will post in a number of languages but this message came with a Portugal flag and was only in the language of his mother country:
“Sad with the result but I know that together we will be able to get back on top.”
Ronaldo has a ton of haters out there but you have to fear for Hungary in Portugal’s final game and admire an athlete who has shown real class since the final whistle in Paris.
