Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe: Beating Chelsea left me in tears

Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe said the roar of the crowd after his winning goal against Chelsea at the weekend reduced him to tears as he scored one of the most important goals of his career.
Defoe’s winning goal for Sunderland ensured that they leapfrogged their close rivals, Newcastle United, out of the relegation zone and now have the chance to save themselves while relegating both the Magpies and Norwich City this week.

After trailing 2-1 at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland fans were fearing the worst but two quick goals from Fabio Borini and Defoe turned the game on its head.
If they beat Everton in midweek, Sunderland will secure their safety ahead of Newcastle and Norwich, and Defoe has revealed the emotion got to him after his winning goal on Saturday.

“Don’t tell anyone! It is hard not to. It is crazy,” Defoe told reporters, via the Mirror, when asked if he was reduced to tears. “It was just the noise. I don’t know what is wrong with me! As I get older, man, I am just getting too emotional.
“It is hard to find words to describe what it was like.
“It was unbelievable. The fans knew how important the game was. The noise was frightening. I got goosebumps.”
Defoe has now scored 15 goals in the Premier League for Sunderland this season – at least 10 more than any other player at the club.
The 33-year-old is enjoying the second-best goalscoring season of his career, having manager 18 league goals in the 2009-10 campaign for Tottenham Hotspur.
