The bus carrying Manchester United players to their English Premier League game at West Ham United has been attacked outside the ground by home fans throwing missiles.
Police surrounded the bus after it became trapped on the road outside Upton Park on Tuesday (NZT Wednesday). It was showered by beer and bottles and had a window broken.
A smoke canister was also let off.
"It wasn't nice, the coach got smashed up," Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney said. "I'm sure you will see the images but it was disappointing."
Many supporters appeared to have turned up without tickets for West Ham's last home game at Upton Park before they move to the Olympic Stadium. Kickoff was delayed by the chaos outside the ground.
It was believed tension boiled over because Manchester United were late arriving to the ground.
West Ham co-owner David Sullivan criticised the visitors for turning up late.
"Manchester United should have been here at 4pm," he said.
"I am very disappointed for our supporters more than anything. We have a fantastic show after the game [to commemorate the club's move] and some of them will not be able to stay because they have buses and trains to catch."
