Guardiola elimination makes Atletico Madrid favourites
Diego Simeone’s men will look to continue the tradition of
winning the Champions League after eliminating a side led by the
Spaniard in the semi-finals
Although Atletico Madrid still have a Champions League final to play
after eliminating Bayern Munich, history is on their side when it comes
to winning it all.
The Rojiblancos booked their ticket to Milan thanks to Antoine Griezmann’s away goal despite
a 2-2 draw on aggregate, reaching the last round of the competition for the second time in three years.
Perhaps more importantly, they eliminated a team coached by Pep
Guardiola in the semi-finals, with the four sides who have previously
done that all going on to win the competition.

Jose Mourinho started it all in 2010, winning the Champions League in Madrid with
Inter after
defeating Barcelona. Roberto Di Matteo did the same in 2012, earning
Chelsea their first ever triumph against Bayern Munich following a 3-2
aggregate victory over the Blaugrana in the semi-finals.
Guardiola has seen all three of his Champions League bids with Bayern
Munich denied, suffering semi-final exits at the hands of Real Madrid,
Barcelona and now Atletico Madrid.
With Carlo Ancelotti and Luis Enrique having gone on to win the
competition, Diego Simeone will try to keep the streak alive by winning
his first Champions League trophy at the San Siro on May 28.
